Think of it as giving a physical or financial asset a digital passport that can be traded, split into smaller pieces, and settled almost instantly. What once took days of paperwork and middlemen can now happen in seconds, with every transaction recorded on an immutable ledger that anyone can verify. The appeal is obvious: it makes assets that were historically locked up and illiquid feel almost as easy to move as transferring money between two bank accounts.

The growth over the last two years has been genuinely startling. Tokenised real world assets have climbed to over $34 billion in total value as of May 2026, up from around $5.5 billion at the end of 2024, representing growth of roughly 229% through 2025 alone. Tokenisation is one answer to that problem, and it has been discussed as such for nearly a decade. What is different now is that institutions which do not move speculatively are building on this infrastructure in earnest. Several structural advantages explain the pull.

Tokenisation allows large assets to be divided into smaller units, lowering minimum investment sizes and widening participation across both capital thresholds and geographies. Taken together, these advantages change the underlying architecture of how assets are issued, held, and transferred. That is the scale of change now underway.

How to Tokenise

Tokenisation begins with a simple question: what exactly is being turned into a token? In the case of a solar project, for example, the token may represent ownership in the project, a share of future cash flows, or a claim on the revenue generated from electricity sales. The rights attached to the token have to be defined clearly at the outset, because the digital token is only as strong as the legal and economic claim behind it.

Take a solar project in Rajasthan valued at INR 20 crore. Instead of financing the entire project through one large investor or a small group of institutions, the project can be placed inside a legal structure and divided into 2,00,000 tokens. In that case, each token represents INR 1,000 of economic exposure to the project. If the project generates monthly revenue from power sales, that income can then be distributed proportionally to token holders.

Once issued, those tokens can also be transferred or traded, meaning an investor who wants to exit does not need to wait for the project to conclude or find a buyer for the entire position. This is the basic logic behind tokenisation: turning a concentrated, illiquid claim into a smaller, more transferable one.

1. Define the asset and the claim. The first step is to decide what the token will represent. In a solar project, this could be direct ownership, a revenue share, or a claim on project cash flows.

3. Link the project data. The token needs a reliable link to the underlying asset, whether through production data, revenue records, reserve accounts, or other verification mechanisms. Without this link, the token exists only as a digital entry, whether the underlying asset is a solar project, a property, or a bond.

4. Mint and programme the token on-chain. Once the structure is in place, the token is created on blockchain and encoded with its operating rules, covering transfer restrictions, payout rights, investor eligibility, and reporting requirements.

5. Issue the token to investors. The token is offered through a primary issuance or approved placement process. Investors hold it digitally rather than through a conventional custody structure.

6. Manage payouts and reporting. The token supports ongoing distributions, record-keeping, and where relevant, redemption or exit mechanics. In a solar project, this means investors receive their share of revenues as the project generates income over time.

Each step carries the weight of the others. The legal right, the economic exposure, and the digital token stay connected and usable in the market only when the full structure holds.

The Risks and Challenges of Tokenisation

Tokenisation makes assets easier to access and transfer, but it also introduces a second layer of dependence: the token relies on both the off-chain foundation and the on-chain infrastructure. If either break, the claim behind the token may be difficult to enforce.

1. Legal and regulatory uncertainty. Tokenised assets do not fit neatly into one legal category. In some jurisdictions they may be treated as securities, in others as commodities, payment instruments, or something else entirely. Cross-border issuance and trading add further complexity because rules on ownership, transfer, tax, and investor eligibility differ from market to market.

2. Ownership, enforceability, and custody. Holding a token does not automatically guarantee legal title to the underlying asset. Its strength depends on whether it is tied to a recognised legal claim that can be enforced in the event of a dispute, insolvency, or transfer problem. The underlying asset must be held and verified off-chain, which introduces dependence on outside parties.

3. Smart contract and data risk. Tokenised systems rely on external data feeds and code. If the data is inaccurate or the smart contract is flawed, the consequences can include frozen transfers, loss of funds, or outcomes that are difficult to reverse.

4. Fragmentation. Tokenised assets currently sit across different blockchains and legal structures that do not always communicate with each other. Until interoperability improves, that limits the practical utility of tokenisation at scale.

5. Governance and compliance. Tokenised structures still need to meet KYC, AML, and disclosure requirements, and gaps in those controls create regulatory exposure. Where governance is unclear, investors may face uncertainty over who controls the rules, who can change them, and what recourse exists if something goes wrong.

Recognising these risks is the starting point. How well they are managed will determine whether tokenisation delivers on its structural promise or remains a fragile overlay on conventional finance.

United States

The United States currently has no single regulator or law dedicated to tokenised assets. Instead, multiple federal and state agencies each claim jurisdiction depending on how a token is structured, creating a fragmented, often unpredictable compliance landscape for issuers and institutions alike.

The CLARITY Act aims to change that. The bill passed the US House of Representatives in July 2025 with a strong bipartisan vote of 294-134. Most recently, the Senate Banking Committee advanced it on May 14, 2026, a significant milestone, though the bill still needs to clear a full Senate vote and receive a presidential signature before becoming law.

At its core, the CLARITY Act proposes sorting all crypto assets into three distinct buckets: digital commodities, investment contract assets, and permitted payment stablecoins. Each category would fall under a defined regulatory authority, primarily the CFTC or the SEC, based on the token’s characteristics.

This matters enormously for tokenisation. Today, whether a token is a security or a commodity often comes down to enforcement actions and court rulings rather than clear statutory rules. The CLARITY Act would replace that guesswork with codified criteria. A token representing ownership in real estate or private equity would fall under SEC oversight; one backed by a physical commodity would likely land with the CFTC. The practical effect is that token issuers would know upfront which rules apply to them and can build accordingly.

European Union

The EU has taken one of the more structured approaches to crypto regulation with the introduction of MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation), which rolled out in stages through 2024-2025. But for real-world asset tokens specifically, the framework isn't as simple as one rulebook. The key question regulators ask is: does this token behave like a stock or a bond? If it gives holders profit shares, voting rights, or ownership in an underlying asset, it gets treated like a traditional security, falling under older financial laws like MiFID II, with all the compliance weight that carries. If it simply tracks the value of an asset like gold or real estate without promising returns, it lands under MiCA instead, typically classified as an Asset-Referenced Token (ART).

What started as plumbing for crypto traders has since evolved into a full-stack financial infrastructure — one that is now being taken seriously by enterprises, institutions, and governments alike. The use cases have grown far beyond trading. Today, stablecoins power payment settlement between merchants and service providers, enable near-instant cross-border remittances for individuals, and streamline treasury and liquidity management for corporations through smart contract automation. In supply chains, they cut settlement times and eliminate intermediary fees between global buyers and suppliers. For institutions, they remove the friction of settlement delays, reducing both capital costs and counterparty risk. And for the hundreds of millions of people without access to traditional banking, stablecoins, accessible through a simple digital wallet, represent a genuine on-ramp to financial services that were never built for them.

The numbers reflect this expanding role. The stablecoin market grew from under $10 billion in 2020 to over $200 billion by 2025 - and projections from Standard Chartered and The Block suggest the market could approach $2 trillion by 2028. That is not speculative hype; it is the market pricing in the reality that stablecoins are becoming core infrastructure for global payments, DeFi lending, and digital asset settlement. The trajectory on the chart is less a prediction and more a recognition that once a better rail exists, capital tends to flow toward it.

What makes stablecoins genuinely significant is that their most important users may not be crypto-native at all. In high-inflation economies, people are using dollar-pegged stablecoins to protect their savings. Online merchants are adopting them to eliminate chargeback fraud. Multinationals are exploring them to move treasury liquidity across borders without the cost and delay of correspondent banking. Same Peg, Very Different Players

Though all are pegged to the US dollar, not all stablecoins are created equal. Tether (USDT) commands the largest market share with approximately $185 billion in circulating supply, making it by far the dominant force in the stablecoin market. Its nearest competitor, Circle’s USD Coin (USDC), holds a distant second place with roughly $75 billion in circulating supply - less than half of Tether’s footprint. Despite growing regulatory scrutiny and competition from emerging stablecoin issuers, Tether’s dominance remains largely unchallenged, cementing its position as the de facto liquidity backbone of the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Law Meets the Ledger

United States - GENIUS Act

Throughout 2025, the United States regained momentum as political sentiment shifted toward enabling domestic crypto innovation. Regulatory fragmentation, however, remained a drag, with oversight still split across the SEC, CFTC, Federal Reserve, OCC, FDIC, and state regimes, leaving token classification and market-structure rules inconsistently applied.

The landmark development of the year 2025 was the GENIUS Act, signed into law by President Trump on July 18, 2025 which is the first major piece of federal digital asset legislation in US history. The Act established clear reserve requirements for stablecoin issuers, mandated monthly disclosures, and removed compliant stablecoins from SEC and CFTC jurisdiction. While a meaningful step forward, broader regulatory gaps persist.

European Union - MiCA

Europe entered 2025 with MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation) fully in force, establishing the world’s most comprehensive legal framework for crypto-asset issuance, custody, trading, and stablecoins. For institutions, this offered something no other jurisdiction could match: legal certainty across the entire value chain. MiCA’s alignment with existing financial regulation made it naturally compatible with institutional processes, while its stringent reserve and governance standards positioned Europe as the safest environment globally for stablecoin issuance. Under MiCA, a crypto firm licensed in one EU Member State automatically gains the right to operate across all 27 EU countries. However, 2025 also exposed early friction, with several national regulators, including France’s AMF and Italy’s CONSOB, signalling concerns over inconsistent supervisory standards across Member States. Regulators like the AMF and CONSOB signalled they may not simply accept a passport from certain Member States at face value and that they may apply additional scrutiny to firms passporting in from jurisdictions they consider to have weaker oversight. This effectively turns the passport from an automatic right into something a firm still needs to earn through credibility, undermining one of MiCA’s core promises of seamless cross-border operation within the EU. Nonetheless, Europe enters 2026 as the global reference point for structured, institutionally aligned digital-asset regulation.

United Kingdom

The UK has yet to establish a dedicated stablecoin regulatory framework. Throughout 2025, progress remained largely consultative, with HM (His Majesty’s Treasury) Treasury and the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) publishing discussion papers but stopping short of binding rules. Stablecoins are expected to fall under the upcoming CASP(Crypto Asset Service Provider) licensing framework, though this remains scheduled for late 2025 into 2026, leaving firms operating under temporary exemptions in the meantime. The UK’s approach is broadly expected to mirror MiCA in outcomes, but meaningful regulatory clarity for stablecoin issuers remains a 2026 and beyond story.

Asia

Stablecoin regulation across Asia in 2025 remained fragmented but moving in the right direction. Hong Kong led the way, advancing a dedicated licensing regime for stablecoin issuers with clear reserve, governance, and disclosure requirements. Singapore followed a similar path under its Payment Services Act, requiring issuers to hold full reserves in high-quality liquid assets alongside strict AML(Anti-Money Laundering) obligations.

Japan introduced its stablecoin framework in 2022, which came into effect in 2023, making it one of the first countries in the world to pass dedicated stablecoin legislation. The framework established a few key rules:

• Only licensed banks, registered money transfer agents, and trust companies are permitted to issue stablecoins — effectively restricting issuance to regulated financial institutions.

• Stablecoins must be pegged to the Japanese Yen or another legal tender and fully redeemable at face value, meaning holders can always exchange their stablecoin for the equivalent in cash.

• Issuers are required to hold reserves in a way that protects customers, with strict rules around custody and segregation of assets.

In practice, this made Japan’s framework quite conservative prioritising stability and consumer protection over openness. Japan remained more cautious, continuing to refine rules around custody and reserve transparency without major new developments.

Further afield, South Korea remained focused primarily on consumer protection rather than building out a comprehensive stablecoin framework. While Asia as a whole is gradually converging toward reserve-backed, bank-aligned stablecoin standards, the regulatory experience still varies significantly by jurisdiction.

A Portfolio Perspective

Public blockchains that support smart contracts such as Ethereum, Solana, and various Ethereum Layer-2 networks serve as the foundational infrastructure for the gradual fusion of decentralised technology with traditional finance. These networks host nearly all decentralised applications and are essential for processing stablecoin transfers, tokenised asset settlements, and decentralised exchange activity, generating approximately $7 billion in fees during 2024 alone, with Ethereum and Solana accounting for more than half of that revenue.

Stablecoins represent one of the most significant use cases for these networks. The stablecoin market now exceeds $300 billion in total supply, with Ethereum commanding the largest share and Solana experiencing the fastest growth. Given the central role these blockchains play in the evolving financial infrastructure, gaining exposure to assets like Ethereum and Solana — through vehicles such as the BGCI Product or the BitSave Crypto & Gold product— represents a compelling portfolio consideration.

Bitcoin is currently trading near 71,800. The list of Bitcoin and crypto obituaries remains lengthy, and doomers, emerging from a three-year hibernation, are once again proclaiming its demise. We believe a reality check is in order.

Lets start with the technical analysis aspect of it.

Even though Bitcoin was in an uptrend, that is making higher highs and higher lows consistently, the momentum indicator started showing negative divergence, i.e., as price made a new high, the momentum indicator (Rate of Change-ROC) failed to make a new high. This is shown in the image with the downward sloping line in the ROC indicator. Momentum precedes price action and hence divergences are warnings of reversal. They don’t mean price is going to come crashing down immediately but are early warnings. The general expectation - given the inflows in ETFs and Bitcoin Treasury Companies, adoption by US banks and other global institutions - was that Bitcoin will touch $150-200k before a correction but the correction came sooner than expected.

Bitcoin is currently in a downtrend, marked by lower lows and lower highs. This doesn’t mean its the end of Bitcoin as we know it. It will find support at some level, and a good one is placed at $61,000. Price tested that support and bounced up from there and is currently at around $71,000.

What’s the sentiment among the masses?

Periods of Fear and Extreme Fear on the Crypto Fear & Greed Index typically reflect widespread market panic, capitulation, and heavy selling pressure, which often push Bitcoin and other fundamentally strong crypto assets to temporarily undervalued price levels relative to their long-term potential.

Historically, these low-sentiment phases have repeatedly acted as attractive entry points because they coincide with reduced speculation, shaken-out retail, and prices that later prove to be significant discounts when adoption, network growth, and fundamentals eventually reassert themselves.

Have the fundamentals changed?

Bitcoin’s price remains volatile. Its fundamentals do not.

At its core, Bitcoin is a globally accessible, 24x7, publicly verifiable network with a hard-coded and finite supply of 21 million. These bitcoins are divisible, portable, and fungible, and are secured by an open global community, with no board, CEO, or central authority that can alter the rules or switch the system on/off.

Bitcoin issuance follows a transparent and predictable schedule. New bitcoins are generated (or technically, mined) every ~10 minutes. Crucially, the rate of new issuance is cut by 50% every ~4 years, an event known as the Halving.

This schedule runs uninterrupted, irrespective of public holidays, market conditions, or external events.

In 2009, 50 bitcoins were generated every 10 minutes.
In 2012, this reduced to 25.
In 2016, to 12.5.
In 2020, to 6.25.
Following the April 2024 halving, new issuance stands at 3.125 bitcoins.

As a result, nearly 20/21 million bitcoins have already been issued. Yet, because issuance continues to halve every 4 years, the last & final bitcoin is expected to be mined only around the year 2140, over a 124 years from now!

This reduction in new supply occurs irrespective of price, market sentiment, schedules, or macroeconomic conditions.

In a world where central banks expand money (and thereby, credit) in response to economic stress, Bitcoin’s monetary policy moves in the opposite direction. Supply growth slows, predictably and permanently. Scarcity increases with time.

The network itself remains live, global, and publicly verifiable at all times. The same rules that governed Bitcoin in 2009 continue to govern it today. What changes is not the rules of the game, but how the world chooses to value it.

Bitcoin’s security is reinforced by the largest pool of distributed computational power ever dedicated to a single network. Since its launch in 2009, the Bitcoin blockchain itself has not been compromised. The network has continued to operate continuously for over 15 years, settling transactions globally without a central operator or control point.

These are not new narratives. They are Bitcoin’s core design principles, and they remain firmly intact.

Crypto made solid, consistent progress! Advancements in tokenisation, on-chain money, and savings vaults were all quiet yet significant. The year also featured major regulatory progress in the United States, including the passage and enactment of the GENIUS Act and the advancement of the CLARITY Act in the House of Representatives.

A few questions stood out among the investors at the end of 2025 — Why did Silver and Gold outperform Bitcoin? And what does the future look like for Bitcoin and crypto?

Silver’s Surge

Silver saw a supply shortage of near 100 million ounces this year. Key drivers included robust industrial consumption (accounting for 50-60% of total demand), particularly in solar photovoltaics (20-30% of demand), electric vehicles, electronics, and AI data centers. Elevated premiums in Asian markets, such as Shanghai ($6-8 premium), reflected strong physical demand and price discovery in the region. Additional factors encompassed investment and safe-haven buying, speculative positioning, and reduced liquidity during holiday periods.

Gold’s Strength

We have seen Central Banks around the world, like Poland, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, India, China, etc. buying Gold (634-800 tonnes~30% of demand) as part of de-dollarisation efforts, to diversify from USD and for geopolitical insulation. Gold is seen as a safe haven asset during geopolitical tensions like the middle east crisis, US-Venezuela tensions, etc. Federal rate cuts mean less carrying cost for gold and a weaker USD also strengthens the allocation into Gold. There were also significant ETF inflows (~700+ tonnes in 2025 amounting ~25% of demand) into Gold which provided further support. Tether was also a major buyer of Gold in the past year (~116 tonnes at the end of Q3).

The superior performance of silver and gold was driven primarily by physical supply-demand dynamics and traditional macroeconomic factors, largely independent of those influencing Bitcoin — with the exception of shared benefits from Federal Reserve rate cuts.

Now what are the macro conditions for Bitcoin going into 2026?

By year-end 2025, the Federal Reserve had lowered its target range to 3.5–3.75%. Additionally, the US Federal Reserve is injecting $40 Billion per month into buying US Treasury Bills which in turn will reduce short term bond yields and as a result investors flee to risk assets to generate better returns. All this signals to a loose monetary policy, which would expect money to flow into crypto and other markets.

This is unlike other cycles in crypto we have had previously as this time around there is better regulatory clarity, institution led adoption and relatively loose monetary policy.

Outlook for 2026: Normalisation and Mainstream Integration

Looking to 2026, the dominant theme is normalisation — digital assets are now being treated as part of mainstream finance, not an exception. Innovation expands with clearer regulations worldwide. The year ahead will feature quiet restructuring around blockchains and non-sovereign assets, driven by macro liquidity, hybrid traditional-digital finance models, platform competition, and long-term structural shifts.

1. Vanguard Flips Pro-Bitcoin, Enables ETF Access

   Vanguard, managing $11 trillion in assets, has reversed its longstanding anti-crypto stance and will now permit clients to trade select Bitcoin and other crypto ETFs through its brokerage platform. This policy shift allows access to funds holding assets like Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, and Solana, aligning Vanguard with growing investor demand for digital assets.

2. UK Recognises Digital Assets as Property

   A new UK law, the Property(Digital Assets etc) Act 2025, came into force on December 2, 2025 after receiving Royal Assent. It confirms that digital assets like crypto-tokens, stablecoins, and NFTs can be treated as personal property. This creates a third category of property, separate from physical items or legal rights. The change gives owners better protection in cases of theft, fraud, or disputes, boosting confidence in the UK’s digital economy.

3. India Parliament Committee Discusses Crypto Future

   India’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance is studying virtual digital assets like crypto and NFTs. The committee held a meeting on the topic “A Study on Virtual Digital Assets (VDAs) and Way Forward” on December 3, 2025 with various stakeholders. A key follow-up session is set for January 8, 2026, with officials from tax and anti-money laundering bodies.

4. Harvard allocates Bitcoin 2-to-1 Over Gold

   Harvard University’s endowment increased its Bitcoin holdings from $117 million to about $443 million through BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF in the third quarter of 2025. At the same time, it raised gold ETF investments from $102 million to $235 million. This means Harvard allocated roughly twice as much to Bitcoin as to gold. The move shows growing confidence in Bitcoin as a way to protect against currency weakening. The University’s Bitcoin investment is also its largest holding, standing at 21% of its portfolio.
   

   

5. J.P. Morgan Explores Institutional Crypto Trading

   JPMorganChase is considering offering crypto trading services to its institutional clients. This includes possible spot trading and derivatives for assets like Bitcoin. The plans are still in early stages and depend on client demand and regulatory factors. The move shows growing interest from big banks in digital assets amid clearer rules.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: BITCOIN (03.01.2026)

The price is currently moving sideways inside a symmetric triangle pattern. This happens when the highs keep dropping lower and the lows keep rising higher, forming two trend lines that squeeze closer together toward a point and signal an impending breakout in either an upward or downward direction. This setup, as depicted in the chart, typically reflects a period of market indecision with balanced buying and selling pressure. Complementing this, the Average Directional Index (ADX) stands at 17, a level that indicates weak overall trend strength and underscores the ongoing range-bound behaviour.
